My next Casio?

Date: 2023-03-21

After going whole 2022 without getting any new watches, I am close to getting a one again. I currently have 7 watches in my collection and I have some candidates. I decided to share it with you, to collect my thoughts about them and it may help decide me, what to get.

Casio DW-5600

This model is basically the closest of the original G-Shock, which have started the G mania all over the world, and since I am the same age, it would be nice to get it. Right now where I live it has an OK price for the Casio DW-5600E-1VER.

The DW-5600 is also nice since it has many color variations, and not just plane colors, but with different patterns too. Since it's a very basic model, it's easy for Casio to make some special editions, usually team up with designers and orgs to make some interesting Gs. Like they did with NASA.

Casio CA-53W-1Z

I like watches that appeared in a movie or a TV show. It feels like owning something that made history via a good movie. This one is very similar to the original CA-50, that appeared in the first Back to the Future movie.

At first sight it looks like a simple calculator watch, but sometimes you don't need more, plus it's very nerdy, and certainly a good conversation starter with people. It's a very retroish piece.

Even if this model wasn't the exact one that Marty wore in the movie, the CA-53W was definitely the one which was on Walter White's wrist in Breaking Bad series.

It has some nice functions, other than the obvious calculator one. You have stopwatch, alarm, and surprising a dual time mode, which means you can setup another clock on your wrist. One negative of the watch is that there is no backlight of any kind.

The CA-53W has some negative display version, with colorful cases, look for CA-53WF. Unfortunately they have the same module, so no backlight either.

Casio DB-36

This is kind of surprise for me. I re-discovered it after a long time. A databank watch with very weird shape of digits, really distorted, yet readable. An absolute 80s vibe with 6 buttons and of course the databank function. What I love about it, is the window border on the the display with rounded corner, which just reminds me of old CRT monitors and TVs.

Despite of being a DB watch, it has a 10 year battery life, which is just amazing. It is also multilingual, 13 language support, take that you stupid smartwatches!

Casio A700

When I originally bought the A168, I thought, it will be a very small watch for me. However after having it on my wrist for a couple of weeks, I fall in love with it. I especially love the proportional digits, it's just a joy to look at. I also like a nice blueish backlight. This lead me to get 2 versions of F91W, and when I saw the A700, it instantly went on my wishlist.

The only con is that I already have 3 of the same-ish module watches, but the presentation is still something I really like. It certainly can go as a dress watch, with the metalic look.

Casio W800H

This one is on my wishlist for a long time, especially the negative display one. I just love stealth type watches. It certainly looks like an upgraded F91W, but with a G-Shock type body.

If you don't like the AE1200 (world timer), you might like this one! It kind of looks weird, similarly to the DB36, but has so many functions! The backlight looks amazing, and it has a 100m water resistant, which is ideal for swimming and whatnot. But maybe don't throw at the rocks when you go to vacation.

One pretty nice features is that no matter which mode you are in (alarm, stopwatch, dual time), you will always see your time in the bottom part of the watch. The main screen shows not just the time, but the full date as well.

Casio MQ-24

This is an odd one in this list, since it's a very budget analogue watch. Very simple outlook also. But something there in its simplicity that's just grabs you. It just tells time. No backlight, no date window, no anything other than, the now.

So which one I choose?

I will definitely let you know. :)
