Many reasons why a Casio F91W is better than a smartwatch!
Date: 2023-03-25
I could easily titled this for just generaly wristwatches, but I wanted to show that one of Casio's most popular and budget option is indeed better than a multi hundred dollar computer on the wrist.
1. Heritage
It's not just about smartwatches being new technology, but it's also about Casio, a company who is doing this for decades, one of the first in many fronts with quartz watches (among many other things). You can trust them to work. Wearing them you feel like you are part of something that goes longer than many of us lived so far.
2. Price
You can't beat the price of F91W even in this shittier economy. Even though where I live it doubled its price for some reason, still a really good gift for people too. And for what it is, perfectly reasonable.
3. You can put it to the test
I heard some interesting stories, that despite the water resistant rating of 30m (splash proof?), people use it for diving, and swimming regularly. I wonder how much an Apple watch can take before you have to give up on it?
4. Look & feel
Let's face it, smart watches looking like a toy, while basically a computer on your wrist. If you are part of the older generation, you remember some of the retro futuristic watches used in Alien, Back to the Future, etc. Or how Michael Knight called K.I.T.T. with his watch. Retro futurism takes us back to a time when everything was simple and yet it worked…
Smarth watches similarly to other "smart" things look the same, devoid any personality. With wrist watches you look at one and instantly can talk about it for hours (pun intended). When was the last time people talked about a Samsung smart watch?
As for the feel, the F91W just disappears on the wrist thanks to its slim look, and amazing strap. If you have problem with resin strap, you can easily change it to a NATO strap (18mm ones work nicely if I remember correctly).
5. Battery life
The F91W has a 7 year battery life, on the other hand a smartwatch has maybe a day. This is just ridiculous in my opinion. Yes, the little Casio doesn't have the bestest of backlight, but its battery still gives a reliable life. It also won't stop being useful, because there is no need for operating system to constantly upgrade.
6. Plenty of upgrade options
There are some nice Casios that might be interesting for the fans. If you want some more dressier, but equally retro option in A168 or A700 (with both having much better backlight). If you want a diver style there is the MRW-200 line. Want something, bigger and full of features? Try the W800h or AE-1200.
