Brave browser has finally got vertical tabs

Date: 2023-07-13

I have mentioned here and on social sites, that in the age of widescreen monitors, there is no reason we should waste horizontal space in a web browsers. Few of the browsers picked up (one was a surprise, Microsoft Edge, which is a nice browser, other than being a proprietary junk). I personally use Vivaldi, but sadly that one was proprietary too, at least in the UI front. No I don't care about the Chromium base, since it's open source.

For long I loved Brave browser, which is faster than Firefox, uses less RAM, except it did not have vertical tabs. Major dealbreaker for me, who uses a few hundred tabs at a time (although this morning I went through them, and closed about 200, time well spent). Firefox/LibreWolf has a nice addon for that, called Sidebery, which in terms of customization is the best option for vertical tabs in any browser.

Anyway, recently I checked out Brave browser, and a "What's new" tab introduced me to vertical tabs! It's not like the community asked them for it, ever since of the first release…

How to enable vertical tabs in Brave browser

To enable vertical tabs in Brave, you have to go to settings, and just search for "vertical tabs", except it doesn't give us anything, so search for "sidebar" instead. Under the Tabs section, you will find Use vertical tabs, and make the flip on the right side, red. Sadly, there is no way to show it on the right side.

How to install Brave browser on Linux?

We have tons of options for popular distros, otherwise just search in AUR or your distros repository. Or you can compile it from source.

What about other browsers?

Looking at these browsers, I feel like I need to write a blog post, comparing each ones options for vertical tabs. I would also talk about, why I will stick with Vivaldi for the foreseeable future, instead of returning to Brave.
