Time to say good bye to social media
Date: 2023-03-31
Note: I am writing this post on March 31st, so nobody thinks that this is just an April Fools thing. Unfortunately it is not. I wish it was. This post will be largely a rant.
Social media and me
Over the past few years I have used only one social media site regularly, the fediverse. It's not one site, really, but a loose collection of sites. After leaving twitter behind in mid-2010s, I already used a site called identi.ca, which back in the day was mostly tech and open source focused. It was a very nice place as I remember it.
My overall experience with social media is heavily mixed. I would say, mostly negative. As much as it had nice moments, and funny moments, I feel my stronger experiences are connected with how vile people can be. And it has nothing to do which social media site I used. It doesn't matter if it was twitter or fediverse, both service has very angry people on it. I sometimes was angry too.
I believe that as individuals we have to decrease the usage of outrage based websites, including twitter, facebook, fediverse, whatever; in order to maintain our sanity.
Recently I wrote on my miniblog, that the current internet only knows the extreme. On one side it is the fediverse, which overwhelmingly left, in fact far-left, with people "I am a communist" in their bio, without ever reading a history book, how much people suffered under communism. And you can't reason them, cause they put up their favorite shield: "real communism has never been tried before". I am not sure that my parents and grand parents (rest in peace), agree with that stupid statement.
The fediverse biggest crime though is block culture, which gives instance admins unlimited power (pun intended, and yes, fedi admins are like Palpatine), to block other instances from all of their users. For whatever reason they like. If they don't like one user of weareretarded.xyz instance, they can just ban the whole instance. Don't even imagine creating a single user instance, cause if you end up on the blocklist, you are basically invisible on the fedi.
What's after fedi?
I still like some of the people I follow there, and I will collect their blogs to stay in contact.
After April 1st I will delete my blob.cat account. I will write regularly here instead.
