Install old Ubuntu themes on newer versions

I am not alone when I say, that I dislike the new Ubuntu themes, and flat themes in general. The elements of UI is not distinct enough, everything is so together, that I have hard time to use it. Most of the time I use keyboard driven interface, so I don't have to deal with this aweful modern trend that just wants us to use mobile UI on the desktop, because designers become lazy.

Install with PPA

Here is a solution to use older Ubuntu themes. Here is the github page, but we can add a PPA for easier install:

  1. First you open a terminal, and the PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:lah7/ambiant-mate
  1. We need to update our sources
sudo apt update
  1. And finally install the themes and icons
sudo apt install ambiant-mate-gtk-themes ambiant-mate-icon-themes
  1. Go to your themes settings and select the theme you want.
  2. Enjoy the nostalgia and the usable interface!

Install for other distros

You need to download the zip file, extract it somewhere. Then copy the icons and themes folder into your ~/.local/share folder.

In case you are wondering: This website doesn't track you. I don't use any javascript or other scripts. I don't store any information about the visitors. It's just pure old fashioned HTML and some CSS (plus some custom fonts). Hosted on Neocities and created with Emacs.
