LEGO: Jurassic Park 30th Anniversary Sets

Date: 2023-03-16

As much as I love Lego, and wanted to get some Jurassic Park sets, I am really disappointed with the announced sets.

I recently read the article on Brickset. And going through the sets, I had some problems with them. Other than the prices of course, which is now even more ridiculous in some cases.

Jurassic Park is one of my all-time favorite movie. I saw it when I was 10 years old, in the cinema, and to this day it's a real technical marvel, not to mention a good story and characters. I read the books too, and I still have the music on casette tape.

Velociraptor Escape (76957)

This set is for little kids, as it is 4+ set. However I don't know if this make sense. I don't think the movie was anywhere near PG category. Especially introducing the deadliest dino, the Velociraptor. After all even Grant scared that chubby kid at the beginning.

This set has a Muldoon and Ellie Sattler minifig, a velociraptor and a vehicle. All for 40 USD! It's a pass for me. Just doesn't give me much. Basically you pay that much for a Muldoon minifig. Lego, what a clever company…

Dilophosaurus Ambush (76958)

I know the Lego sets age stuff, is about how hard it is to build something, and not that what they represent. I just know when I saw this scene with the Dilophosaurus as he is toyed with Dennis Nedry, I was terryfied. This dino has a menacing look. So yeah the scene is definitely not, 6+.

We get a Nedry minifig, a doliophosaurus and a nice jeep as well! I really like that we have the memorable "East Dock" sign. I just hope we can flip it, just like Nedry did it in the movie.

This little set is only 20 USD, which I think is a fair price for it.

Triceratops Research (76959)

I am not the only one whose favorite dino as a kid, was the Triceratops. This is one of my favorite scene as well, and not just because of Malcolm's "That's a big pile of shit." line. Who wouldn't want to lay on the dino's side and feel the animal's breathing? Sadly there is no Alan Grant minifig, which just makes me a little bit angry. We have Dr. Sattler and Ian Malcolm, plus a little pile of shit. At least the people with MOCs will have a lot of fun, creating a bigger one. Plus point is the Jeep, which looks good for a 6 stud wide vehicle.

One nice dino, 2 minifig, one small pile of shit, a Jeep and a shovel for 50 USD.

Brachiosaurus Discovery (76960)

This set brings back the memories of the first full dino sight, when Grant and Sattler first time saw the Brachiosaurus. Amazing scene! We get also a Hammond minifig, with or without his cane, I don't know. I like that Grant has his velociraptor claw. Jeep is looking very nice, although I don't think 4 people can sit in it. I am disappointed that the Brachiosaurus is almost plain grey color, and I hope it has moving legs.

Price: 80 USD

Visitor Centre: T. rex & Raptor Attack (76961)

The penultimate scene at the visitor's center. Sadly we only get one raptor for the one T-Rex. Instead we get a two sided scene where we can replay the velociraptor hatchery scene. It has 6 minifigs, as we finally get Tim and Lex, as well as Henry Wu and Samuel L. Jackson, sorry I mean Ray Arnold. Another Ellie Sattler minifig, with Alan Grant.

I think at 130 USD, this is set is way overpriced. You can get the T-Rex from the "T-Rex Breakout" set, which also has Grant, Malcolm, Tim and Lex minifigures and 1,5 cars. And I think the T-Rex in that set looks better!

Price: 130 USD

I think most of these sets are a let down, and if you know somebody who loves the movie, just buy the T-Rex Breakout diorama set, or maybe the Dilophosaurs one. Almost all of them are way too pricey. Which just reminds of me the talk between Hammond and his blood sucking lawyer, that park should be visitable for everyone, not just for the richest…
