What I am playing these days (2024 February)
Date: 2024-02-26
Not long ago, I got a better graphics card from my family. It wasn't a regular gift, kind of out of the blue, and I still didn't know why I got it. Anyway I am happy with a small, but meaningful upgrade. I never really had a gaming computer, and played games, sometimes decade after release. Now, I still don't have a gaming computer, but I could try some more modern stuff.
System Shock Remake
A separate post will come about 2023's game of year. Who knew a 29 year game's remake can be so good. Rocky development, satisfying gameplay and story. This game has no business being this good. In age of AI that hates white people (see Google Gemini), here comes an AI that hates all people! Now this is really scary!
Styx: Masther of the Shadows
Styx is a stealthy assassin game, where you play a goblin character. Sounds weird, but it is a good game. I like stealth games, and it was cheap on GOG, and it was recommended by one of my favorite youtuber.
Batman: Arkham City
Back in the day I only finished Arkham Asylum, and I loved it. For me it is really hard to get into open world games, because most of them are busy work, and so many choices that at the end, I can only make one choice, and that is to not continue playing. After 3 failed attempts during the past decade, I have finally finished Arkham City. It is fantastic, every aspect of it. I liked the story, and the musical theme is one of my favorite Batman theme.
In order to stay sane, I focused just a little bit of sidequests, and no major Riddler trophy hunting. Although you can destroy some baloons and cameras easily along the way. If you are interested in sidequests, you can do it after the main story, which I am fine with it. There are tons of challenges outside of story, both for beating up criminals or taking them out silently.
There is a reason why this is heralded the best Batman game ever made. It has a tight script, with Batman's best villain, never gets boring in gameplay. Stakes are high, but not Earth shattering. There are no aliens or multiverse bullshit. Or lame suicide squad. Harley Quinn is just a side character, as she should be.
Batman: Arkham Knight
This was the ultimate test for this card. I remember when Valve advertised SteamOS with the release of Arkham Knight. Then the game had one of the worse releases ever, a buggy, unoptimized mess. The game had lots of bad press, and somehow I am still spoiler free. After finishing City, I went ahead and try out if I could even run it. After some rocky start, it runs really nicely on normal details.
The game is beautiful, and not just on a 2015 level, but in 2024 as well. You will hardly find a night city better looking, and it includes Cyberpunk 2077, which is also a good looking game. Animations are on point, and despite the huge city, everything is so seemless. It is open world, so what I am doing is to focus maybe 1-2 sidequest outside of the main story. Still need to finish it, but I am in the final 3rd I think. I put it on hiatus to play Arkham Origins, since "Knight" is the final game of the series.
Batman: Arkham Origins
During my Arkham Knight run (which is still going), had the feeling that I should play Origins, which is the prequel to the Rocksteady trilogy, featuring a younger, more raw Batman than who we see later. Origins was made before Arkham Knight -, and it would have been weird to play it, after finishing the story.
I think WB Montreal did a good job, making the story personal. It is still early years of Batman, and there are unique elements can't found in the later games. We are not just beating up criminals, but cops needs some convincing that we are on their side. People are still don't believe that Batman exist, he is still largely a myth.
Tomb Raider I-III: Remastered
I played the first TR games when I was young. They are cool exploration based games and it is still good to play. The upgraded graphics are nice, and the devs did a good job. They added modern controls, which is really shitty. Original tank controls are good, becase the whole game was design around grids and cubes. If you play the "Lara's Home" tutorial, she will guide you what to do in each situtation. You know how to handle far away ledges, or close jumps. Not to mention you can do backflips and sidejumps which can greatly help movement in combat and jumping puzzles. I have a feeling modern controls was made into the game, so some of the people who had bad memories of tank controls have a way to play it. Well, happy news: tank controls for the win!
Wolfenstein: The New Order
This is my 4th attempt to play this game. According to Total Biscuit, back in the day this was game of the year material. Shooting is good, I unlocked all of the stealth perks though, because I can't do headshots reliably. Story is OK, it has too much cutscenes for my taste. I enjoy a cutscene from time to time, but they could have trim it down a little. I know that the second game will have even more. New Colossus is not a good game.
Dying Light
Story? What is the story? It's a survival, parkour game, involving a zombie outbreak. Also open-world. I am currently stuck, because some of the character need medicine, but a guy with mental problems (they still think their dead mother is alive) has the medicine, but he only gives some, if you collect a VHS tape and some other item. Don't you love stupid fetchquests? Meanwhile I don't remember the main story, why we landed in that place.
They missed a great deal of making it an RPG, so as an agent we land in a situation where survival is critical, yet we are learning skill from 0? We could have already choose some skills, after all we play as an agent, who probably can take care of themself. Nevermind! Game looks good, and jumping on rooftoops is so much fun, at times.
