Doom 64 and Doom 64: the Unseen Evil mod
Date: 2024-12-13
I never had the chance to play Doom 64 on original hardware, and I didn't know much about it. So when a few years ago Nightdive made an official PC port, I was surprised that it is a whole new game, and not just the original levels ported to N64.
The game has very different textures, and similar looking demons, but there are new ones as well. Same goes for the weapons, and the music, which changed to an eire, ambient music.
However I didn't play Doom 64, but on the 10th, I have found a good mod that won at The Cacowards…
Doom 64: Unseen Evil
This mod can Doom 64-ify the original textures dynamically. I don't really understand the know-how, so in simple terms, you can use this mod for any maps that uses the original textures. First I booted up the original Doom, and I absolutely loved it! It gives a different vibe to the game to the point that it might not be even Doom.
What's more amazing that since some of the demons that exist in og Doom games, doesn't exist in Doom 64, so it had to be made from scratch.
The places I feel much darker, and different thanks to the colored lighting, and the above else the ambient music.
Beside this mod, I also started play Doom 64, and I love it!
Downloads
You can buy Doom 64 from GOG.
The mod of Doom 64: Unseen Evil is downloadable from their website. It works maps that uses the original arts of Doom and Doom 2.
And finally…
"If you're looking for a new challenge, the exclusive Redemption Denied difficulty will bring some of the crueler monster placements from PSX Doom into the vanilla Doom maps."
Prepare your butt kicked, hehe.
