Dead Trash is far from trash
The bitesize fps revolution is pretty nice!

Date: 2025-09-25

There is a new trend in indie gaming, primarily lead by DOSMan Games. They publish/create games that are short, 2-4 hours only, and they price it accordingly, about 3 euros each. The games are usually made with Easy FPS Editor, which is a free engine, only available for Windows, however in my expierience it runs on Linux as well. One of the main property of this engine, is simplicity, and it uses a grid based system to make maps.

The setting is wildly different each time, it's not like they try to copy each other. Dead Trash was made by Crowhill Studios.

One of the newest games in this series is Dead Trash. A sort of post-apocalyptic shooter, with a surprisingly well made comicbook intro and transitioning scenes. Seriously, it's good. Different style than Max Payne or XIII, but still worth watching.

Here is the premise:

"Years into a brutal lockdown, a once-thriving city lies in ruins, abandoned by its government and overrun by vicious, mindless infected. Grab your hammer, collect your nerves and enter the mayhem."

Environment and atmosphere

A survivor fps, where we meet mutants, soldiers and other hazardous elements. Just make sure you check trash, because you might find some treasure in them (hint: ammo). Guns are good, melee is very useful to save ammo. Exploration is key, you might find weapons, sooner than later.

I really dig the atmosphere. Dark streets, cut of with wooden walls, and sometimes invisible ones, which sadly take off from my immersion score. Other than guns we have a flashlight, which luckily have infinite battery, and pretty good to look around. I don't know if enemies react to a flashlight (like in F.E.A.R.), so I keep using it.

Guns and enemies

Some of the enemies are hitscan ones, and hard to see them from distance. Guns are good, and after a while, we have plenty of ammo. I made sure to change up the use, and the Beretta is my favorite. I think shotgun has finite ammo to carry, which is funny, cause that is my least used weapon, and not because it's not useful, but simple I like other ones better. Shotgun also takes a lot of time to reload, which relegates it to the back of the pack.

Melee is suprisingly useful, both hammer (fast, moderate damage), and big axe (very slow, big damage, can one shot the most basic enemies). You don't have to be truly upclose to damage enemy, I recommend moving between strikes.

Graphics

Graphics wise, I like that the enemies and weapons had this slight photographic feal, it kind of reminds me of Realms of the Haunting, where weapons also looked photorealistic, in an otherwise pixelly setting.

The game can be extremely violent. If you aim the hammer/axe at the head, the blood will splatter there, or aiming at any bodyparts really.

I don't know how long till I finish the story, so I can't comment on that. Some of the bosses are easy, and some can be tough, cause of the hitscan.

There is no map, so you might feel a little bit lost, especially in the underground eras in the city. I think some of the same-ness feels alright in a city which was abandoned and decaying for years. In fact there is not enough vegetation to my liking. xD

Do I recommend Dead Trash?

It's a short game, with good variety of melee and ranged enemies, in an urban setting, where you have to survive. I find it atmospheric, and well though out so far. I have some problems with mouse trackball, but not with regular mouse.

I think it's certainly one of the best looking and more fun of the bitesize fps games lately (alongside maybe Satan). If you like the setting and the premise, I highly recommend it, and there is no reason not to try it, just look at the price!

Note: screenshots are from the Steam page, since I was too lazy to take my own (might take some photos later), and I wasn't really prepared to write a post about this game.
