Amnesia, still the game to beat in horror | parasurv's webspace

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is 10 years old this month, and I still haven't finished the game. It's a testament to the game presentation, that shows us psychological horror, how it should be done.

I never liked the bloody gorefest horror movies, and I stayed away from these types of games as well. I prefer the lingering shadows, the unknown, the things that might be there, the sounds as they echo through a place, not knowing what or who makes them…

This year an awesome mod came out called Remastered, that even the original devs approved of. Many graphical changes, sound and others. Just check out the page for it. Really quality mod, truly gaves the game a new life, if you want to replay the game before Amnesia: Rebirth.

Frictional Games also open sourced the engine of both Amnesia: The Dark Descent and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. While they are 10 and 7 year old games, I think many people are interested, how it is done. If we think about how much good stuff turned out from old idTech engines, I expect some amazing changes from this as well.

I restarted my playthrough with the Remastered mod, because it looks like they made changes that requires it. I am only at the water monster, but I see that it's absolutely amazing looking, a true update to the game. I am glad that with modding, the devs didn't have to take time to update their game, and they uplaud the modders effort.

The devs that they made their game modding friendly, and it made sure their games live long. We need more Frictional Games type of devs, with more resources so their creativity can flourish.
