Movies every day in May: The Equalizer

I originally watched in on the 4th, but I didn't have energy to write my opinion about it yesterday.

I know it was Star Wars day, but I have already seen the important movies many times, and I am not going to see the Holiday Special.

I wanted to watch "The Equalizer" for a long time now. I like Denzel Washington, but I simple never got to it.

He plays a nice, quiet guy (Robert McCall), who helps many people at his job. He trains the young, chubby guy who wants to be security guy. He has a routine, he drinks tea and reads books at the same diner. In this diner he meets a young woman, Teri, who is an aspiring singer, but currently "works" for the local Russian mob.

After Teri got beaten by her boss, Robert decides to take the matter into his own hand, and went after the Russian pimps.

I have to say, that despite of the slow and methodical build up of the first 30 minutes, it is much more eventful, and detailed that most of today's movies. In fact the build up of his character is much more enjoyable for me in this way. It reminds me of an underrated spy/action movie, "Ronin" from 1998.

The character interactions are excellent, we can see Dan has a good relationship at his work, and basically everywhere he goes. But under the quiet and reserved look, he has a past, that was slowly revealed.

Action scenes are well directed and brutal, but also enjoyable, since these are really bad guys he is going after. The scum of the Earth.

The Equalizer is a fantastic action-thriller, and I loved every minute of it. The suspense, the action was all in the right place.
