Movies everday in May: John Wick 4
Date: 2023-05-01
While I was watching John Wick 4 in the cinema today, I was thinking about doing a movie month, where I watch one movie each day and write about it. Fun little project, and I haven't really watched anything new for a while, I almost always watch my old favorites.
I have to say I only like the first John Wick movie. I don't remember the second and third one, and I didn't watch them in preparation to see the 4th one. Let's face it, we don't watch John Wick for the story, but for the action scenes. Those scenes were somewhat realistic in the first one, but after that they let go any kind of believability.
John Wick is a simpathetic character, who lost his wife to illness, and then he lost the dog, that she left to him, so he wouldn't be alone. This was all understandable. He had to come back from retirement. He was a professional assassin. This is his revenge. The first movie was finished, but Hollywood loves his sequels. So they made three.
Interesting each movie made more than the one came before. John Wick become a cool protagonist. But there is a reason why we won't remember the last 3 movies. It has no heart.
The 4th movie was written likes this: let's get together and think about action set pieces which would be cool to make and audience would enjoy (also never mind these would be ridiculous). And try to come up with some nonsense we can fill between them.
Donny Yen is also cool as the blind assassin. Still if you want to see blind man fight, I prefer Daredevil. At least DD needs constant medical assistance from his friends and allies, unlike John Wick, whose plot armor even stronger than in previous movies.
John Wick 4's best character is a dog. He is fearless and loyal to his master, who also wants to kill Wick, for the money. Doggo lives, and that moment at least gives a major turn for them and Wick. Of course Wick saves the doggo.
Anyway, I can only recommend this 2 and a half hour waste of time if you want to finish the series. Looks like it was the finale, finally. I liked the dog, Donny Yen and some parts of some of the action scenes. Directing was nice, especially the shooting in the building towards the end, with the overhead camera, which just reminded me of some good old fashioned video game. I also liked some of the European locations with churches and other buildings, some gorgeous shots, really - worth of painting them.
Luckily if I want to enjoy John Wick, we could always go back to the first one.
